BACKGROUND

El Matadero

Description

It’s one of the last places you’d want to go unless you’re looking for “fun and action” or to become a sadistic killer. Dirty, dangerous, and full of ruthless guys willing to work for a few bullets.

In this department, brutal mercenaries are trained and slaves or debtors are prepared to become pit fighters (that is, if they pass the test).

Located near the Caravan Hole, it’s responsible for supplying hitmen throughout the Wasteland. It’s undoubtedly one of the most dangerous locations in Merkadome, although for a handful of bullets you can always escape with ease or find what you’re looking for.

Masca

Mad Mark
His real name is Mark Berserk, although he’s called “The Butcher” since he’s the department’s Chewmaster, the one pulling the strings. He’s a former mercenary and gang member, famous for his cruel survival methods.

Based on his exploits in the Scrapbridge area and his former years as a pit warrior, he managed to forcefully seize control of the Slaughterhouse, thanks to his reputation as a tough guy. But aside from being extremely lethal, he’s also a very intelligent and sadistic man. His true age is unknown, and all sorts of crazy theories circulate about it. “Be careful because Mark has a rope, and you could end up hanged or simply quartered just by looking into his eyes.”

Other personalities

Erik Pilsen
Better known as “The Snake” for how elusive he can be, despite having only one eye. He is a junkyard worker who works for Lenny in his museum store called “Snaggletooth” and was once an extraordinary mercenary.

Frank “Black Machete”
Volunteer who helps with the carcasses arriving at the Slaughterhouse and green line worker at Cibum. He stays as inconspicuous as possible.

A thin figure with long hair, wearing a leather jacket and carrying a large black machete. He has a dark past that he doesn’t talk about, but which is reflected in the terrible burns on the right side of his head, where he has no hair left.

Lenny Mr. Kill
He is also known as “The Ace of Spades” for his mastery of these.

Wearing his cowboy hat, this former mercenary of the Fifth Reich is in charge of tanning the mercenaries and hitmen of the Slaughterhouse. A great collector of any object related to the wars of the World of Yesteryear, he runs “The Breeding House of Death” under his motto “Born to lose, live to win”, where there is no mercy. He is also the owner of a small business where he displays and sells his “treasures”, which is run by a scrap metal dealer in his charge.

Mother Slaughter
She is a Mutard in charge of raising the beasts of the Wasteland to turn them into food. She runs “The Hill with Eyes”, where you can get meat, not always fresh.

Sin-Plicious
No one knows how the hell he managed to survive for so long or be in charge of anything. He’s completely insane and seems to have no brains at all. Don’t be fooled, though, he’s dangerous and ruthless despite his childish appearance.

He is known for supplying other departments and premises with certain substances from his small clandestine laboratory, where he creates “Nuke”, “Moonshine”, “Merkadonaina” and “Cola-K.O.” His clients are known as the “Brain-Drain”, who worship the use of certain substances and consider him a kind of demigod.

He has business dealings with the Greenhouse and the Red Light District.

Violentiam
Nicknamed “Dominatrix,” she is an extremely wild and dangerous former gang member who manages the fights in the Cage. In her spare time, she secretly works in Purgatory.

Main locations

Buildings

Cibum
This is the building where beasts are raised to be transformed into food. Their products can be found in the shop run by Mutard Mother Slaughter.

The Twilight
So named because it’s where the gladiators go, or should go, at dusk, although many escape to the bars and dives of Merkadome. Commonly known by the locals as “Slimelight,” for the strange light it emits at night and for all the mud that usually covers the ground.

Aside from their daily routines, aspiring mercenaries also have a small facility for testing and creating lethal weapons, under the supervision of Masca and his right-hand man, Lenny. It also serves as a warehouse for war supplies.

The Breeding Place of Death
Its name says it all: either you kill or you are killed. It is not a place where there is a middle ground.

Lenny trains his mercenaries in the art of war without any scruples. It’s the closest thing to what was once known as a Ludus Magnus.

Exitium
This is where the department’s Masca lives. A gloomy place that reeks of death, adorned with the skulls of unfortunates who failed to become mercenaries and perished in the attempt.

The vast majority of the neighborhood’s resources can be found there, protected by his bodyguards. One of the most interesting aspects is that the bloodshed ends in this building, and in its basement there is a secret room to which only Masca can access.

The Cage
It’s where aspiring mercenaries fight. It’s also used as a place for debtors to fight to the death to pay off their debts. Many Wasteland residents come here looking for some action, betting on the poor, unsuspecting souls who end up inside.

Slimelight
Named for the strange light it emits, this is where aspiring mercenaries make their home. It also has a small department where they test and create lethal weapons, under the supervision of Masca and his right-hand man, Lenny.

Premises

The Hill with EyesIt’s a butcher shop, or something like it. Where you can get all kinds of products of dubious origin for a modest price.

Nuclear Alchemist
It’s a small clandestine dive. Sin-Plicious ekes out a living, making and distributing his shit (highly sought after in the Red Light District and by many Wasteland dwellers). But be careful, because if you can’t pay and get caught short… you could end up in the Breeding Ground of Death. Many mercenaries consume their products to help them endure the harsh training they undergo.

Snaggletooth
It’s a sort of museum shop run by the Serpent. In it you can find anything related to war, weapons, and items highly sought after by scrap dealers, collectors, and Fifth Reich fans.

Places of interest

The Freak Wall
This is the back wall of Nuclear Alchemist. You can always find a lot of freaks who call themselves Brain-Drain and who worship their demigod when they’re completely wasted.

The Gallows
It is located in the center of the Slaughterhouse. Here all the unfortunates who dare to look at Mad Mark end up, hanging from a rope as a warning to the rest of the inhabitants of the place.

The Blood Trail
In Matadero, there’s a trail of blood that runs through its streets. It’s easy to see if you walk around any of its buildings. It’s also not unusual to see canteens filled with it. Blood is life, after all.

Si vis pacem para bellum
Near the Gallows, it is a monument built with crushed weapons to remind us that we should never let our guard down in times of peace.

Resources

Despite the grim nature of the Slaughterhouse, it supplies Merkadome with mercenaries and hitmen. You can get weapons, drugs, and meat, though it’s not recommended. It’s also common to see many morbid individuals frequenting the department to bet on its fights.
